Hudson's stars join state's best

There are All-Stars among us in Hudson County.

Four Hudson players, as well as Marist head coach Ron Heyward, took part Thursday night in the Scholastic Baseball Coaches' 33rd Annual All-Star Game at the Diamond Nation sports complex in Flemington.

"It was a great experience," said Heyward. "I played in this game in the past, and to now coach the kids and Eddie Sorondo for the final time, was a lot of fun."

Four players made it from Hudson County - Eddie Sorondo of Marist, Jeremy Selecki of St. Peter's Prep, and Alex Teran and Anel Sotolongo of North Bergen.

"It's an honor," said Sorondo, a senior who is heading to Delaware State next year. "There are a lot of great players in Hudson County and Jersey City. I am very happy to represent my high school and county."

Sorondo, who started at catcher for the North, caught four shut out innings for the North. He went 0-for-2.

For all four seniors, this was their first All-Star appearance. All agreed it was a great way to end their terrific high school careers.

"It's kind of humbling. I've never been in a game like this," said Teran.

Teran started in left field for the North. He had one outfield put out, and put some good wood on a couple of swings. He cracked a pitch to the warning track in right center before it was caught in the third inning, and grounded out to second in the seventh.

Sotolongo came in to play shortstop in the fifth inning and went 1-for-2 and scored the North's first run. Selecki went 0-for-2.

As for the game itself, the South won, 7-3. The South built up a 7-0 lead after eight innings. Washington Township's Adam Warburton, Bishop Eustace's Ken Fretchko and Pitman's Steve Schuler dominated the North through the first six innings of the game, holding the North to just one hit delivered by Mahwah's Anthony D'Alessandro.

"I'm excited to play here for Prep. I know a lot of the kids that are on our team, and I get to meet some new people," said Selecki.
